Barbados Update + Brazil Announces Ignite 2009 in Rio! (Now Also in Spanish)

I want to apologize that this post is only in English - I am hoping to get it translated, but I can not guarantee it at this time.

Quiero disculparme pues esta primera entrada está en inglés – Espero poder lograr que sea traducida, pero no puedo garantizarlo por el momento.

However, for those of you who can read this, I got some really good things to report, and I hope that someone with the capacity can summarize what I am writing and share it with those who may not understand.

Sin embargo, para aquellos que pueden leer esto, tengo algunas muy buenas cosas que contarles, y espero que alguien que tenga la habilidad, pueda resumirlo y compartir lo que estoy escribiendo con aquellos que no puedan entenderlo en inglés.

As you already know, I was invited by the Canadian Government to present Ignite The Americas at the "The Fourth Inter-American Meeting of Ministers of Culture and Highest Appropriate Authorities".
The meeting was a 2 day affair, which brought together many members of cultural ministries from OAS member states to create a list of priorities that the CIC (Inter-American Committee on Culture) authorities would work on for the next 2 years.  Remember that meeting that we all went to in Toronto at the Royal York, it was similar in nature and setting to that, but with more people attending.

Como ya todos saben, fui invitado por el Gobierno de Canadá a presentar sobre Ignite las Américas en la “Cuarta Reunión Interamericana de Ministros y Máximas Autoridades de Cultura”. Esta reunión tuvo una duración de 2 días y reunió a muchos miembros de los ministerios de cultura de los Estados miembro de la OEA para crear una lista de actividades prioritarias en la que las autoridades de  CIC (Comisión Interamericana de Cultura) trabajarán en los próximos 2 años. Recuerdan la reunión a la que todos fuimos en Toronto en el Royal York? Bueno, esta fue similar en su naturaleza y estructura sólo que con más gente participando.

The meeting took place at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Cultural and Conference Centre, in Bridgetown, Barbados.  This was the first Cultural Ministerial to take place in the Caribbean...so that in itself is a very beautiful thing.

La reunión tuvo lugar en el Centro Cultural y de Conferencias Lloyd Erskine Sandiford en Bridgwtown, Barbados. Esta fue la primera Reunión Ministrial a desarrollarse en el Caribe… así que eso de por sí es algo muy hermoso.

The Honourable Steven Blackett, M.P., Minister of Community Development and Culture of Barbados chaired the meeting.  On day one there were presentations on:  From Montreal to Barbados (results of work of the CIC from 2006-2008), Towards the V Summit of the Americas, and Effective Public Policies to Develop and Sustain a Vibrant Cultural Sector.  Our man Randy Eastmond, Ignite Delegate from Barbados was in the spot!  I was hoping to see Shari as well, but she was not able to attend.  On the first day, Randy needed to drop some things off at the studio he does work with, so he, Gavin and I went.  Man...Randy rolls in style.  The studio was nicer than many of the ones I have been to in Toronto.  He is also booked solid, the weekend coming up he had 5 shows in 2 days.  This man, holds it down.  Thanks Randy for hosting us proper and showing us around Bridgetown.

El honorable Steven Blackett, M.P., Ministro de Desarrollo Comunitario y Cultura de Barbados, presidió la reunión. El primer día hubo presentaciones sobre: De Montreal a Barbados (resultados del trabajo de la CIC desde el 2006 hasta el 2008), Hacia la V Cumbre de las Américas, y Políticas Públicas Efectivas para la promoción y sostenibilidad de un sector cultural dinámico. Nuestro compañero Randy Eastmond, delegado de Ignite de Barbados, estuvo allí! También tenía la esperanza de ver a Shari, pero no le fue possible atender. El primer día, Randy tenía que dejar algunas cosas en el estudio en el que trabaja así que Gavin y yo fuimos con él. Randy de verdad que tiene mucho estilo! Su estudio era mucho mejor que muchos de los  que yo he visto en Toronto. También está totalmente ocupado, el próximo fin de semana ya tenía 5 shows en 2 días! Muchas gracias Randy por ser un excelente anfitrión y por mostrarnos Bridgetown.

The second day was when I was presenting on Ignite and Gavin was presenting on Remix.  The energy towards Ignite at the meeting was really good; already on day one many of the Ministers and people speaking made special mention of Ignite and the fact that we would be presenting.   In the morning there was a presentation on Partnerships & Alliances in the Economy of Culture, the roles of public, private and international partners, and UNCTAD presented “Creative Economy Report 2008: The challenge of assessing the creative economy towards informed policy-making".  Then I was up...under the plenary titled:  Engaging Youth Participation in the Economy of Culture.  I only had 10 minutes to recap on Ignite, so my presentation had to be very top level. Nonetheless, I believe I managed to effectively present Ignite in a succinct, informative, and exciting way that energized all attendees and helped identify tangible next steps.   I will post my presentation in another blog entry for anyone who is interested to read.

El segundo día fue cuando presenté sobre Ignite y Gavin presentó sobre Remix. La energía hacia Ignite durante la reunión fue realmente buena; ya el primer día muchos de los Ministros y de la gente participante hicieron mención especial sobre Ignite y sobre el hecho de que estaríamos ahí para presentarlo. En la mañana hubo una presentación sobre Asociaciones y alianzas en la economía de la cultura: el papel de los socios de los sectores público, privado e internacionales, y UNCTAD presentó el “Informe sobre la Economía Creativa 2008. El desafío de evaluar la economía creativa: hacia la formulación de políticas públicas informadas”. Luego, fue mi turno… bajo la sesión plenaria titulada: Involucrando la Participación de la Juventud en la Economía de la Cultura. Sólo tuve 10 minutos para recapitular sobre Ignite, así que mi presentación tuvo que ser sobre lo más importante. Sin embargo, creo que logré presentar Ignite efectivamente de una forma sucinta, informativa y emocionante que energizó a todos los participantes y ayudó a identificar próximos pasos concretos. Colgaré mi presentación en una próxima entrada de mi blog para el que esté interesado en leerla.

After the presentation, the floor opened for discussion and many of the ministers/highest appropriate authorities voiced great support for the continuation of Ignite The Americas. 

Después de la presentación, se abrió la reunión para discusiones y muchos de los ministros/máximas autoridades dieron un gran apoyo a la continuación de Ignite las Américas.

The Director of International Affairs from the Ministry of Culture of Brazil ANNOUNCED THAT IGNITE THE AMERICAS 2009 WOULD TAKE PLACE IN RIO DE JANEIRO, MOST LIKELY IN AUGUST!!! This was great news and congratulations to Panmela, Toddy and Jacqueline for going and meeting with all the right people in Brazil to keep the momentum going, and getting commitments for moving this forward.  It was announced and it is OFFICIAL.  Unfortunately, I do not have any information on how it will actually take place, who will be involved, etc, all I know is that it will happen again!  I am on the case trying to find out more and will post again, when I get more info.

El Director de Asuntos Internacionales del Ministerio de Cultura de Brasil ANUNCIÓ QUE IGNITE LAS AMÉRICAS 2009 TENDRÁ LUGAR EN RIO DE JANEIRO, PROBABLEMENTE EN AGOSTO!!! Esto fue una noticia fabulosa y felicitaciones a Panmela, Toddy y Jackqueline por ir y reunirse con toda la gente adecuada en Brasil para mantener el momentum y obtener compromisos para seguir moviendo esto hacia adelante. Fue anunciado y es OFICIAL. Infortunadamente, no tengo información sobre cómo se realizará, quién estará involucrado, etc. Todo lo que sé es que volverá a pasar! Estoy pendiente de obtener más información sobre esto y una vez la tenga lo colgaré  en mi blog.

Other countries joined the conversation, proposing that Ignite becomes a permanent activity of the OAS and that all member states work to have local and national Ignites that attend hemispheric forums on a yearly basis..  It was very exciting to hear these ideas since this is exactly what we were proposing!  Overall, really good energy about moving the objectives of our forum forward, and an official announcement that Ignite will take place again....not bad for 2 days!

Otros países también participaron en la conversación, proponiendo que Ignite se convierta en una actividad permanente de la OEA y que todos los Estados miembro trabajen para tener Ignites a niveles locales y nacionales que participen en los foros hemisféricos anualmente. Fue muy emocionante oír estas ideas ya que son exactamente lo que estamos proponiendo! En general, realmente hubo una muy buena energía sobre empujar hacia delante los objetivos de nuestro foro y un anuncio oficial de que Ignite volverá a celebrarse…no está mal para 2 días!

In terms of what is coming next.  The Ignite recap video is finished, we are just waiting for translation so we can add subtitles and then post it online for everyone to view. We are at the final stages of the Ignite report. When it is completed we hope to share it with you and receive feedback. We hope you will be able to use these products of Ignite as tools to share with anyone you want to.

El video de recapitulación de Ignite ya está terminado, solo estamos a la espera de traducción de forma que podamos incorporar los subtítulos y luego colgarlo en línea para que todos puedan verlo.
